After being falsely accused of attacking his wife Evelyn's friend Sophia, Lane confronts Evelyn. She refuses to believe his denials and presents him with a new divorce agreement, stripping him of all assets. Lane signs it, declaring that his departure will cause the Carl family to fall. Later, Evelyn confides in Sophia, who reassures her that divorcing the powerless Lane is right and that she should pursue the heroic Sword Bearer instead.
