Panax fails the once-in-10,000-years Ascension: after 10,000 years of cultivation he still lacks merit and loses the one remaining spot. A senior gives Merit Beads and sends him to the mortal world to earn genuine gratitude that will light them. Other herbs, including resentful Hellebore, vow to take the ascension. At a feast a disciple suddenly chokes and collapses; guests cry “ghost.” The master rushes in, calms people, and says, “he’s my master in the mortal world.” Panax heads to the mortal realm, but the sudden death and accusations leave the ascension outcome uncertain.
