Synopsis

For three hundred years the cultivator Sean Yale single-handedly guards the pass, holding the demon tide at bay and keeping Aureate safe. Years of lone vigilance breed complacency and suspicion; leaders accuse him of inventing the threat and exile the protector they relied on. Without Sean, demons pour through and the realm collapses into chaos. Unbowed, Sean moves on, lending his unparalleled might to other lands while those who spurned him scramble for help. As war consumes Aureate, his return is inevitable: he drives the demons back to the wastelands and restores peace. In the end, the nation that cast him out must face the full cost of its doubt and betrayal.

Tight plotting shows long-term consequences of distrust. Sean's arc rewards patience and moral complexity.

Aureate deserves a scholarship in poor judgment. They exile their savior then beg for help. I laughed through my anger.

I suspected the court had political motives all along. Their humiliation of Sean foreshadowed a brutal reckoning.
