At the meal she says William handed her to Victor and points out she is technically his sister-in-law, which silences a younger man. He plans to study at the city library; the man offers to accompany him and follows. The follower's presence spooks the younger man—he searches for a hidden weapon, finds none, and decides to test him. An onlooker accuses them of hiding something, leaving that test unresolved.
