At a recognition banquet, Old Mr. Fenton asks Mr. Harrison to end an engagement because his grandson has another love interest. Mr. Harrison equivocates and Ben lashes out. The crowd then accuses Stella of impersonating the Harrison heiress and being adopted; Stella explodes, recounting twenty years of mistreatment—living in a servant's room, wearing hand-me-downs, time in a correctional camp and permanent scars—which shifts sympathy toward her. The Smiths shout she lies and demand Stella remove her gown to prove the scars. Forced into public proof, Stella faces an immediate, humiliating choice.
