Ms. Yowell asks Mr. Cooper to find her a husband; he unexpectedly offers himself. She intends to bring the request to His Majesty at the empress' coronation, recalling an "unbreakable promise" sealed by an emerald pendant. Invited to attend in noble robes, Clarissa is torn because "the man I love is marrying another"—Sophia—and before leaving she lashes out at Lord Browne. At the coronation Sophia is crowned and wed. Clarissa appears in plain clothes, draws startled questions, and interrupts the ceremony with, "I have something to say!" The crowd freezes on her public demand.
