The spat escalates when a wounded beggar collapses; Clara insists on helping despite insults and someone rushes the man to the hospital. A new argument breaks out when Clara discovers her pocket watch has been sent to the Thorns as the marriage token. The Thorns arrive to fetch a bride and announce Ms. Cox is to marry their young master—who, bewildered, asks, 'Who exactly are you?'
