At a military camp, Marsha and her child Freddie are cornered by a group of women who accuse Marsha of being a homewrecker. The confrontation turns violent: Marsha is struck, threatened with death and publicly shamed while the mob hurls insults and tries to drive them away. Marsha protests, insisting Freddie is not illegitimate, and invokes protection by naming Gordon as camp commander. The attackers reject her claim, declaring Gordon their son-in-law rather than her husband, undercutting her appeal to authority. Marsha and Freddie are left beaten and exposed as the camp's authority hangs in doubt.
