Lady Beverly is told by the imperial physician that Duke Andrew is near death and beyond medical help. The family faces collapse: Andrew is the only legitimate heir, and the three adopted sons are incapacitated—one struck by an epidemic and rendered idiotic, one recovering from a broken leg out of town, and one with a speech impediment who can't inherit. A parent prays for Andrew; then someone proclaims the ancestors have answered. The household rushes—horses readied, they depart for the Moore House on Sweet Lane amid kitchen arguments and a sleepy, hungry child—Andrew's survival still unresolved.
