Ms. Bennett rushes from a hospital where a doctor tells her her father's surgery was successful. Minutes later she gets a call: she passed the final interview at Clark Group and must report Monday. At the company's grand lobby she marvels until coworkers sneer, calling her a "bumpkin" and hoping she trips. Flustered and fearing she'll jinx things, she stumbles; an employee helps her up, scolding, "Don't sit on the floor next time."
