Luther and another boy, Kyle, bring eggs to neighbor Mdm. Hunt because their mother just gave birth to twins and needs brown sugar for postnatal soup. Mdm. Hunt negotiates a trade: brown sugar in exchange for twenty eggs. Luther persuades everyone and the deal is made, but neighbors accuse Mdm. Hunt of swindling. After she takes the sugar, Mdm. Hunt claims the boys still owe twenty coppers, arguing the eggs will make them sick and force medical costs. The scene closes with a neighbor shouting, “Hand it back.”
