At a tense family scene Natalie, the country girl brought home, seizes Mila's room, throws out her things and even strikes a household member, who shows a swollen backside. Parents scold Natalie while Mila insists it's her fault and reveals Ryder was beaten by a servant because of her. Mila vows to enter an international music competition and promises that if she wins she'll leave the Smith family to avoid dividing them. Her parents refuse to let her go and praise her upbringing over Natalie. Left unsure of belonging, she whispers, "Perhaps I'm the real outsider here."
