Ryan returns to his family home, only to be told by his brother's wife that he must sleep outside in the pigsty, then offered the doghouse instead. She openly scorns his humble job as a day laborer. His brother reveals the village is due for a lucrative redevelopment, and the couple concludes Ryan returned now solely to claim a share of the payout. They decide they cannot let him take it and resolve to get him gone, with his brother agreeing to withhold the money.
