The protagonist, a young woman mistaken for a refugee by a soldier named Brandon, makes an incredibly difficult long-range shot to blow up an enemy ambush, saving his unit. Brandon dismisses the feat as luck and orders her to be detained for interrogation. She openly taunts him, accusing him of past cowardice and of seeking promotion through her capture. Refusing to be taken, she declares she won't waste time playing soldier with him and his men, leaving her defiant refusal hanging in the air.
