During a game Henry strikes his younger brother Gideon with a ball; Gideon asks why Henry hit him. Their mother berates Henry for failing to watch his brother, sends him to his room and forbids dinner. Later a hot-water spill is called an accident, but the mother accuses Henry of scheming and scolds him. Henry insists he didn't mean harm and vows one more day to fulfill their father's last wish so he can leave the woman who shares his blood but never showed him love. Tonight's punishment puts that plan in jeopardy.
