On a tense phone call Heather rejects the arranged marriage and demands to go home, complaining that men are idiots. Mr. Russell, hired to look after Heather, is confronted for posing as someone else and admits his first intimate contact with her while standing in, then confesses he has fallen for her. Another man offers to impersonate the fiancé and is coached in light, coaxing flirting. Meanwhile Mr. Barrett refuses his father's summons, declares he's in love with someone he shouldn't, and says, "Whoever wants her can have her," leaving the heiress's fate unresolved.
