A ragged child calls a wealthy man “Daddy” in public, and onlookers immediately mock the kid and accuse Henry of fathering a bastard. Family members erupt: Henry intervenes, a bully grabs the child, and a brief scuffle follows; the child insists he’s not hurt but is appalled that someone touched him. The scene shifts when a woman threatens the river’s fish, then another person claims the fish actually hide treasures and offers a dare: pull a speck of gold from a fish belly and he’ll bark like a dog. The crowd accepts the wager, ending on the tense test about to begin.
