Arthur Vance, a legendary New York lawyer, faces an unthinkable dilemma when his childhood friend Richard, a Wall Street magnate, asks him to defend his son Eric. Arthur discovers Eric is the serial rapist and murderer who took his own daughter's life. Choosing justice over friendship, Arthur turns on Eric in court, securing a death sentence. Enraged, Richard conspires to frame Arthur, destroying his reputation. With the aid of his loyal assistant Amy and former rival Professor Grant, Arthur clears his name. He then relentlessly pursues Richard's vast insurance fraud empire, surviving even a desperate kidnapping plot against his surviving daughter. In the final reckoning, Richard is convicted on all charges and sentenced to life, allowing Arthur to uphold his sacred belief: everyone is equal before the law.
