Ian's presence makes a woman question how he knows she's wearing clothes discarded by Rebecca. As Mr. Chapman confronts her, Ian intervenes. Rebecca arrives and angrily accuses Ian of allowing a widow, a Lynch, to sit on his lap, questioning his feelings. She mocks the woman's marital status. Later, Mr. Chapman visits the woman again, expressing his longing. Alone, Ian is troubled, denying it was her the previous night and deciding he needs a cold shower to clear his mind.
