On a crowded bus Amelia is publicly attacked by Jessie and neighbors who call her a "country bumpkin", accuse her of stirring trouble to help her husband's campaign (he's competing with Harkins), and threaten to report her. Bystanders step in, warning they'd tell her husband's superiors, and the mob breaks off. Later at a shared meal Amelia surprises others with good cooking and thanks Harkins for his help. The mood shifts when her husband confronts their marriage: "I know you want a divorce. If you don't trust me, let's go to the City Hall tomorrow." The decision remains unresolved.
