On their wedding night Tobias is called away and Sophia confronts a woman who touched her cat — "Don't touch my cat with your dirty hands!" The woman slaps back and accuses Sophia of using despicable tricks to force Tobias into marriage. Household members scold Sophia, noting how a prior car accident changed her from gentle to sharp-tongued. Sophia refuses to apologize and insists it's her house. Ms. Zabel erupts, vows to replace Sophia as Tobias's wife and orders her to hurry. She leaves with Pippin, leaving Sophia facing a threat to her marriage.
