Annie has run away after a fight and refuses the guaranteed Quinbert spot; Ms. Logan cannot reach her and reports Annie hasn’t claimed the $20,000 scholarship. At home the family fractures: relatives argue about who’s to blame, the mother scolds and tells Annie not to return, even saying harshly she can “do it out there.” As the family reels from Annie’s disappearance and the ruined opportunity, they receive a new emergency: the hospital calls and Yasmin is told she must undergo a heart transplant now.
