A manor steward brutally executes Lilian, a maid, as a warning to curb ambitions among the servants after the young master becomes marriageable. Sally, whom Lilian had once saved, is horrified. Immediately after, a male servant named Duke tries to force himself on Sally, boasting that his sister is the mistress's wet nurse and he can claim her as a wife. Sally fights back and cries for help, but he mocks that her servitude contract means she cannot escape, leaving her trapped between his assault and the household's oppressive hierarchy.
