After three assassins attack Ms. Smith, Terry Herring rushes in to save her; she is shaken and trembling, and onlookers scorn Terry for failing 'as a husband.' At the same time a summit convenes to redivide territory in the West. Rival leaders mock the Smiths — led by a young granddaughter now labeled 'useless' — and argue they need not wait for her. Insults escalate into threats: speakers demand punishment and hint at seizing parts of the region. The episode ends with the Smiths humiliated and the summit poised to move against them, leaving their safety and land in immediate jeopardy.
