A report shocks the household: Willa publicly proposed to a beggar and walked off with him. The governor's son, humiliated, demands action; though he refuses force, he orders Mr. Smith to investigate the beggar and "send him to his demise." Mr. Smith's men confirm the sighting and begin tracing the man's background. Meanwhile, Ms. Stone prepares to go out, saying she's bought everything, showers, changes into designer clothes and calls someone 'darling,' vowing to make 'her' proud.
