Valerie returns with rope marks and the King of Northo's cape. Her father promises to believe her and punish attackers, but relatives turn hostile. They argue the king's gem-studded cape proves she was an honored guest, so barbarians couldn't have tormented her. Accusers insist she faked the wounds and dressed to display them, hurling insults and threats. The cape that should protect her becomes proof of deceit. When someone demands, "What's that on your body?" and insists on seeing, Valerie is exposed and left facing immediate humiliation and danger.
