At a private reception Mr. Stone arrives; staff rush and Meg is warned, "Don't let him cross that line." A toast for Mr. Nixon is announced and Mr. Stone notices a missing necklace. Meg presses a drink on him; when he asks, "do you think I spiced your drink?" the possibility of tampering is raised. The drink takes effect unusually fast. Mr. Stone grows unwell and Meg offers to help him upstairs, while someone thanks Ms. Gray. A final doubt—"What am I even thinking? Meg won't really let him do it"—leaves Meg’s intent and the consequences uncertain.
