After Flainn is named Forging King, rivals publicly accuse him of driving his master Dashiel to suicide and demand he be banned. A desperate craftsman brings a broken heirloom blade to Mr. Lever, begging it be repaired so he can enter the contest, win prize money, and save his family's indebted forge. Mr. Lever refuses, claiming he is not the man they seek and that he vowed never to forge again. The creditor Yusuf appears, pressures the petitioner and gropes her; someone shouts "Let her go!" Her safety and the forge's fate remain unresolved.
