In the ER after a school riot a stabbed girl, Demi, and her injured father arrive while the hospital is low on Type A blood. Staff learn Jack — a boy whose leukemia relapsed — also needs Type A now. Medical staff argue: Violet pleads for Demi but they say Jack can't wait; Harold prioritizes Jack. Then the hospital's main shareholder orders the bag to go to the leukemia patient. Blood is diverted, Demi must wait, relatives accuse Violet of favoring her first love's child, and a man collapses unconscious as staff race to revive him.
