At a hospital, a woman is hemorrhaging; staff warn she's critical and relatives scold a man for not visiting. A woman identified as Mrs. Lawrence insists she's not family, while Mr. Lawrence sends flowers but stays away. Remembering being called filthy and past violence that ended their marriage, Mrs. Lawrence resolves to hand over divorce papers herself. She slips into his office, leaves the documents with staff, and asks them not to tell him she was there. Later an assistant announces the delivery: "your... friend"—"Zoe?"—and Mr. Lawrence's question leaves the handoff unresolved.
