A condemned man pleads he was "confused" after a treasonous act; the lord nevertheless orders his death, and the prisoner warns vengeance. After he dies, the group learns John is dead but the Mist Association still controls summoned beasts—the Baron used a bone whistle to guide them. Injured fighters admit they can only fight at Rank 1, so a direct fight is impossible. Haven, the only male Awakener, is told to take two people and flee through the back while an ally holds off the beasts. Massive creatures close in, leaving their escape uncertain.
