At the hospital Lily learns her father's surgery will cost at least $100,000. She begs Ms. Dorsey for help, promising to work, eat less and sing to repay. Staff cite hospital rules and can only offer a small sum. Mr. Spencer and Mr. Foster press cash on her; Lily refuses, saying her father wouldn't accept charity. She vows to keep Dad alive and wait for mother while trying to "figure something out." At registration she gives her name, Lily Lowe. When an unfamiliar melody plays, someone asks, "What's this song? Show me." The question forces her next move.
