After six happy months together, Yale gives Nancy half his family's heirloom jade and promises, "You will be my eyes," binding them as family. Nancy, secretly pregnant and planning to tell him, finds Yale suddenly injured; at the hospital doctors say he is hemorrhaging and needs an urgent RH-negative transfusion. Only the wealthy Bacon family matches—suggesting a rare blood tie—and time runs out. Faced with the shortage of matching donors, Nancy vows, "I'll find a way to save Yale," and rushes off to secure the blood, leaving his fate unresolved.
