Cecilia Moore declares she will marry Prince Oscar, shocking her family and court because Moore military power and Palmer wealth could be affected. At the palace an official reveals Cecilia had feelings for Prince Danny, but the king refuses that match and scolds her for defying him. Lord Moore pleads for mercy. Cecilia says she may be unable to bear children and argues Oscar, outside succession and able to take concubines, is a safer choice. The king orders the match to Prince Oscar. Oscar, bemused, asks, 'So you like me?' leaving his acceptance and the court's response undecided.
