While She Starved - Episode 1

Fern opens a letter from her father: he says he misses them at the base, but only three people can go and mentions Edwin took Vera and her children. The envelope contains no allowance. Fern later recalls that for three years the man sent love letters but no money and stopped answering requests, claiming authorities were monitoring him. A famine follows: thugs seize their house and the family becomes homeless and starving. In the final beat Fern decides to sell her blood to buy food, a desperate step that leaves their fate unresolved.
