While Mrs. Lewis recovers after a hospital trip, her son Wendell faces a tense family meeting. His childhood sweetheart Sue is pushed as the ideal daughter‑in‑law, while Wendell's girlfriend Yvette is openly dismissed as from a different world. Mrs. Lewis compares people to cheap, hormonally altered fruit and pressures Wendell to choose Sue. Wendell rejects that, insisting, "Yvette and I will make it work." The scene turns when his mother warns he will go abroad for further study and says Yvette "won't get the chance," leaving their future unresolved.
