Nora urgently confronts Joe, shouting "My mom is dying!" He rebuffs her, says it doesn't concern him and threatens to call the cops if she keeps harassing him. Nora begs him to listen: she’s been diagnosed with lymphoma and a fortune teller said the illness is retribution that requires atonement. She confesses Joe is the person she wronged most and pleads for his help. She then reveals the tangible stake—the gold jewelry her mother left for her is still in Joe’s possession. The episode closes with Joe forced to decide whether to return the jewelry and answer her plea.
