When Celia asks to call off her engagement, Nicholas agrees, but Uncle Sterling, who gave him 2% of Holden Group, refuses to revoke the shares. He sets two conditions: someone must take the blame for breaking the engagement, and a woman must "publicly apologize to Celia" and "admit you were the mistress who came between her and Nicholas." Lena is named and will be ruined; she and Nicholas protest that this will destroy her reputation. Onlookers already accuse Nicholas of parading a mistress. The episode ends when Ms. Brooks arrives at Holden seeking Mr. Holden, leaving Lena's fate unresolved.
