After a tense hospital prayer, doctors confirm Ian's surgery succeeded; nurses note he clutched a paper crane and showed a strong will to live. Ian appears, declaring that he beat the illness and has come to find Alice as promised. Back home, a granddaughter tells her grandmother she has learned cooking, wood-cutting and wild plants, apologizing for not understanding the woman's strict care. After the grandmother's death the household has had no visitors. A knock interrupts, and the visitor is immediately accused: "Aren't you the mistress Dad married? What're you doing here?"
