Outside, onlookers swarm the door; one voice pleads not to open it, but the crowd forces a standoff. Accusations explode when an onlooker yells, "Adam, you bastard! You must have done something to Rhea," turning curiosity into outrage. A physical scramble and shoving block the doorway. The group decides to fetch Mr. Catton to intervene, voices warn it's bad, leaving Adam trapped at the center and the confrontation about to escalate.
