Searchers report to a lord that the missing woman was nearby and left traces. At a rural home, a small boy catches his mother as she nearly falls, insisting he'll always protect her. A man appears, recognizes the woman and accuses her of sleeping with him yet bearing a son by someone else; he demands to see the child. The household shows Sam tending his sick mother—grilling fish and gathering fruit—and reveals a blood jade bracelet he has. After someone notes Sam is three and a half and a fifteen-month gestation, the man asks, "Is Sam really my child?
