At a public gathering people learn the child's father "ascended," meaning he is dead, and gossip paints the mother as pitiable. Quella, who vanished five years ago and has returned with a child, declares she has found a new father for the child: her pledged fiancé, His Highness. The woman now presented as Princess Consort objects, reminding everyone the engagement was reassigned after Quella's disappearance. Quella insists the bridal position should revert to her now that she's back and even offers that the child call His Highness "Father," leaving the rival stunned and the decision resting with His Highness.
