On his deathbed the monarch orders the capital sealed and quietly issues a last edict: find Lillian and make her the heir. Eunuch Jerome had smuggled Lillian south to Destree; the Goodwins hid her and married her to their son, Matt Goodwin, to disguise her identity. Jerome, growing ill, gives Lillian a pendant that proves royal blood and begs Matt to protect her. Matt wins first place in the imperial exam and is celebrated. The episode ends when someone at court demands, "Are you divorcing Lillian or not?", leaving her claim and the edict unresolved.
