At a celebration for Matt, newly crowned top scholar, the scene explodes when he announces he will divorce his wife Lillian. Pressed by Maxine and the powerful Russells, he offers taels and demands Lillian sign so he can secure support; he even mentions making another woman his concubine. Lillian refuses because Jerome is ill and she won't leave him. Crowd members threaten her and warn Matt his reputation will be ruined. A three-day ultimatum is imposed, and a mounted party is ordered to ride through the night to reach Destree in time to find Her Highness.
