At a gathering, someone compliments Capt. Nash's outfit while a woman worries aloud that asking Lizzie for money will make her look down on her. Her mother calls to say Jacob is awake and wants to see her, but Leah refuses to go. Moments later Greta bursts in: Ms. Burke has been taken away and someone accuses the summons of being a dirty trick. Those present are forced to fake cheer, apologize, and call one woman heartless. A housebound woman insists on taking a walk after two weeks in bed, leaving Leah torn and the crisis unresolved.
